UNESCO-ICOM 2026 Global Survey on Use of AI in Museums

Dear colleagues, members and all interested museum professionals,

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the way museums preserve, interpret, and share cultural heritage. From collection management and research to accessibility, education, and visitor engagement, museums around the world are beginning to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by AI. To better understand this evolving landscape, UNESCO and ICOM have launched a global survey on the use of Artificial Intelligence in museums, inviting institutions of all types and sizes to share their experiences, practices, and perspectives.

We warmly invite you – both our members and all other interested institutions and professionals – to take part in this initiative and to share it widely within your organisations and professional networks. The survey seeks to collect concrete examples and baseline data on how museums are currently integrating AI into their practices. It will also examine how these uses align with key international frameworks, including the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021) and the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums. By capturing diverse perspectives from institutions across different regions and contexts, the initiative aims to identify both emerging trends and critical support needs. Available in the official languages of UNESCO and ICOM, the survey aims to ensure broad and inclusive international participation.

The survey is open until 21 July 2026.
