ICOM SEE Annual Conference held in Sarajevo

The ICOM SEE Annual Conference, “Museums uniting a divided world”, took place in Sarajevo on 3 and 4 November 2026. Hosted by the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the conference was organised by ICOM SEE in cooperation with ICOM Bosnia and Herzegovina and the National Museum.

The two-day programme featured a keynote lecture and 18 papers presented across four thematic sessions exploring memory and ethical interpretation; community participation, inclusion and learning; heritage and urban identity; and connections between collections, audiences and institutions. The conference provided an inspiring setting for exchanging experiences and engaging in open dialogue about how museums can bridge social, cultural and political divides. Discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration, diverse perspectives and trust in developing more inclusive museum practices.

Alongside the conference, the ICOM SEE Board met in a hybrid format, with members participating both onsite and online. Among other matters, the Board adopted the new ICOM SEE Statutes.

The gathering offered a valuable opportunity to strengthen professional ties, explore new collaborations and reflect on museums as spaces for encounter, mutual understanding and connection across borders.
