At the regular (June) annual General Assembly of ICOM, held on 24 and 25 June 2026, the revised Code of Ethics for Museums was adopted, which sets out the ethical principles for museum institutions and museum professionals, in order to support museums (and museum staff) in safeguarding cultural heritage, strengthening public trust, ensuring responsible management of museum collections, and enhancing the social relevance of museums. The new text of the Code of Ethics reflects the role of museums in contemporary society and is aligned with the recent ICOM museum definition adopted in Prague in 2022.
